Stress Counselling
Support for the everyday pressure — work, academics, family, finances — that builds up until it feels unmanageable.
What is stress?
Stress is the body and mind's response to pressure. A little of it can help you focus and get things done. It becomes a problem when it stays high for too long, or when the demands on you feel bigger than your ability to cope.
Almost everyone feels stressed at times. Needing support does not mean you are weak or failing. It means the pressure has grown larger than you can carry alone.
Common sources of everyday stress
Stress rarely has a single cause. It often builds up from several areas of life at once:
- Work deadlines, workload and difficult colleagues or managers
- Exams and academic pressure
- Family responsibilities and expectations
- Money worries
- Strain in a relationship
- Worries about your own health or a family member's health
- Big changes such as a move, a new job or a new baby
- Juggling too many roles at once
How stress shows up in the body
Stress often appears in the body before you notice it in your thoughts. If you have new or severe physical symptoms, please see a doctor to rule out physical causes.
- Headaches
- Tight muscles, especially in the neck, shoulders and back
- Constant tiredness
- Trouble sleeping
- Stomach upset or loss of appetite
- A racing heart
How stress shows up in your mind and behaviour
- Feeling overwhelmed or on edge
- Irritability and a short temper
- Difficulty concentrating or remembering things
- Putting things off, or struggling to decide
- Pulling away from friends and family
- Relying on food, screens or other habits to cope
- Finding it hard to switch off and relax
When stress becomes too much
It may be time to talk to someone if you cannot switch off, if stress is affecting your work, health or relationships, or if it is turning into constant worry or low mood. Counselling can help with that too.
If stress ever feels unbearable, or you have thoughts of harming yourself, please call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 112 straight away.
How stress counselling helps
Stress counselling is a practical, supportive space to look at what is driving your stress, separate what you can change from what you cannot, and build skills for coping. Your counsellor may draw on approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, rational emotive behaviour therapy and solution-focused brief therapy, shaped around what suits you. Counselling can help you:
- Understand what triggers your stress
- Notice and change unhelpful thought patterns
- Practise calming and relaxation techniques
- Set boundaries and manage your time
- Say what you need to the people around you
- Plan realistic next steps
What a session looks like
In your first session, you talk about what is going on and what you would like to change. There is no pressure to share more than you are comfortable with. From there, sessions combine conversation with practical steps to try between sessions, at a pace that suits you. Everything you share is confidential.
Who stress counselling is for
- Working professionals under pressure
- Students facing exam and academic stress
- Parents and carers balancing many demands
- People with money worries
- People going through a big change
- Anyone who feels run down and cannot say why

If stress is frequent, hard to switch off, or affecting your sleep, work, studies, health or relationships, counselling can help. You do not need to wait until you reach a breaking point.

They overlap. Stress counselling is for everyday pressure from work, studies, family and money. Stress management counselling is more structured support for long-term stress and burnout. If you are unsure which suits you, we can help you choose when you book.
How many sessions will I need?
