Affirming counselling for LGBTQ+ people

LGBTQ+ counselling at Aptimind is a safe, confidential and affirming space for people of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Being LGBTQ+ is not a problem to be fixed. Counselling is here to help with the emotional pressure that can come from living in a world that is not always understanding, and to help you understand yourself at your own pace.

Sessions are available in person at our centre in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, or online. We do not try to change anyone's sexual orientation or gender identity.

What LGBTQ+ means

LGBTQ+ describes people whose sexual orientation or gender identity differs from what society often assumes as the norm. The term brings together people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and others, shown by the plus sign. It helps people who may have felt overlooked or misunderstood to feel seen and valued.

  • Lesbian: women who are emotionally, romantically or physically attracted to women
  • Gay: people attracted to others of the same gender, often used for men attracted to men
  • Bisexual: people attracted to more than one gender
  • Transgender: people whose gender identity differs from the gender they were assigned at birth
  • Queer: an umbrella term some people use for identities beyond traditional categories
  • Questioning: people who are exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity
  • Plus (+): other identities, including non-binary, intersex and asexual people

Identity, orientation and expression

Some people know who they are from an early age, while others take years to understand themselves. There is no set timeline, and every experience is valid. Identity has several related parts:

  • Gender identity: a person's inner sense of being male, female, both or neither, which may or may not match the gender assigned at birth
  • Sexual orientation: who you are emotionally, romantically or physically attracted to
  • Gender expression: how a person shows their gender through appearance, clothing, voice and behaviour
  • Non-binary identity: people who do not see themselves as only male or only female
  • Fluid identity: an identity that can shift over time
  • Asexual identity: people who feel little or no sexual attraction, but can still feel deep affection
