Depression Counselling
A safe, supportive space for the persistent low mood, exhaustion and loss of motivation that depression brings.
What is depression?
Depression is more than sadness. Feeling low for a short time after an upsetting event is a normal response. Depression is a low mood that stays for weeks, months or even years, and it shapes how you think, sleep, work, relate to others and find motivation for everyday life.
Many people with depression feel tired for no clear reason, lose interest in things they used to enjoy, and slowly feel cut off from themselves and the people around them. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone, and it can improve with the right support.
At Aptimind Counselling & Therapy in Chennai, depression counselling is available in person and online, in a private space where you can open up and slowly regain your emotional strength. Depression is nothing to be ashamed of.
Major depression: when everything feels heavy
This involves deep sadness, hopelessness, loss of interest and exhaustion lasting weeks or months. Getting out of bed, getting dressed, working, studying or meeting people can feel very hard. In counselling, you explore what is behind the pain, rebuild your sense of self-worth, question negative thoughts and slowly regain motivation, sleep and routine.
Persistent depression: a low mood that does not lift
Some people do not cry or break down, but live for years with a constant low mood. Life feels flat and little interests them. They may seem fine on the outside while feeling emotionally tired and disconnected inside. Counselling helps you rebuild habits, release held-in feelings and challenge long-standing negative thinking, so that small pleasures and a sense of meaning can return.
Atypical depression: good and bad days in waves
Some days feel unmanageable and others almost normal, which can be confusing. Mood can shift quickly depending on people or situations, sleep and appetite may swing, and confidence can rise and fall suddenly. Counselling helps you recognise your triggers, build emotional balance and develop steady ways of coping when things change without warning.
Situational depression: after a life event
This can follow a breakup, job loss, illness, trauma or a sudden change. The emotional shock can leave you overwhelmed and confused, and returning to normal life without support can feel impossible. Counselling gives you space to process the loss or change, understand yourself better and move forward without losing yourself.
Only a qualified professional can tell you which kind of depression you may be experiencing.
Signs of depression
Sometimes depression appears without any clear reason. From the outside you may seem fine, while inside you feel drained. Many people suffer in silence because they do not want to worry others or do not know how to put their feelings into words. Signs can include:
- Feeling tired all the time, however much you sleep
- Giving up hobbies or withdrawing from people
- Feeling empty, numb or hopeless
- Sudden crying or intense anger, along with a wish to be alone
- Negative thoughts about yourself and your future
- Changes in eating and sleeping
- Trouble falling asleep or getting out of bed
- Difficulty concentrating on work or studies
- Pulling away from family and friends
- Feeling worthless
If you are having thoughts of self-harm or suicide
Feeling worthless can sometimes lead to thoughts of harming yourself or ending your life. If this is happening to you, please reach out for help now. In India you can call Tele-MANAS on 14416 at any time, or call 112 in an emergency. You can also tell someone you trust, or contact us.
These feelings do not mean you are weak. They are signals from your mind that it needs care and support.
Depression linked to relationships, family or marriage
Depression can follow relationship tension, a breakup, marital problems or family conflict. When love and emotional safety feel threatened, it hurts both heart and mind. Counselling can help you:
- Heal after heartbreak
- Rebuild your sense of self-worth after being hurt
- Learn to communicate more clearly in relationships
- Cope with marital conflict and stress
- Cope with feeling lonely even when people are around
Work stress, burnout and performance pressure
Many people hide depression behind work. Long hours, pressure from managers, job insecurity or career uncertainty can slowly wear down your inner calm. Counselling can help you:
- Cope with constant stress and deadlines
- Balance work and personal life
- Gain clarity and confidence about your career
- Reduce fear of failure and anxiety at work
Feeling numb or uninterested in life
Depression is not always crying. It can also feel like having no interest or excitement, being too tired to start even small tasks, days that feel hollow, or sleeping just to escape. This numbness is very common. Counselling helps you work through it, break unhelpful habits and build small routines that bring purpose back.
Depression after trauma or loss
Painful experiences such as childhood trauma, emotional abuse, the death of someone close or a major loss can stay with you for months or years. Counselling can help you understand your emotional triggers, reduce fear and self-blame, rebuild trust in yourself and others, and build emotional resilience instead of simply avoiding pain.
You are not defined by what hurt you.
Depression and overthinking
Depression often creates a loop of repeating thoughts such as 'I am not good enough' or 'Nothing will ever change'. Over time these thoughts wear down your confidence and energy and can add to anxiety.
Counselling helps you look at these patterns, understand the emotions behind them and replace self-criticism with self-compassion. Gradually your mind can feel calmer, and you can learn to work with your thoughts rather than against them.
How depression counselling helps
When thoughts stay unspoken, they tend to get heavier. Counselling gives you a non-judgemental space to say what you have been holding in, and a trained counsellor listens closely and helps you work through the pain in a healthy way. Many people find their mind feels lighter and clearer after talking.
You can choose in-person sessions at our centre in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, or online from home, whichever feels more comfortable. In some cases a doctor or psychiatrist may also need to be involved, and your counsellor can talk this through with you.
Ready to feel like yourself again?
It does not matter whether you have felt this way for five days, five months or five years, or whether your depression is mild or severe. Support is available. At Aptimind Counselling & Therapy in Chennai, we work with you to build a plan around your needs and move toward a calmer, more confident life.
Helpful answers
Common questions
Is feeling sad the same as depression?
Not always. Sadness after a difficult event usually eases with time. Depression is a low mood that lasts for weeks or longer and affects sleep, energy, concentration, work or relationships. If you are unsure which you are experiencing, a counsellor can talk it through with you.
Can counselling help if I do not know why I feel low?
Yes. Depression can appear without one clear cause. Counselling helps you make sense of what you are feeling and what may be contributing to it, even if you cannot explain it yet.
Do I need medication as well?
That is a decision for you and a doctor or psychiatrist. A counsellor can talk through what you are experiencing and help you decide whether a medical opinion would be useful.
